Sinking Feeling

Land is slowly slipping into the rising seas.

Global sea level rise is accelerating incrementally over time rather than increasing at a steady rate, as previously thought, according to a new study based on 25 years of NASA and European satellite data.

Despite infamously describing climate change as a “hoax”, the Trump Organisation sought permission to build a sea wall to protect the Trump International Golf Links in County Clare. The Organisation’s submission cited sea level rise due to climate change as one of the reasons for the wall.

As the 21st century continues and the ice continues to melt, it will become clearer which countries have a greater incentive to mitigate climate change, and the resulting geopolitics has the potential to drive division and conflict.

Russia will be less affected with these sea level rises, and may benefit from a more temperate climate due to access to unfrozen natural resources . In contrast, the US may not only suffer from the new drought zones which will also blight equatorial regions, but its low-lying eastern coast is threatened by the accelerating loss of Antarctic ice with both New York and Miami facing submersion.
